Ethiopia’s Trade Revolution Pays Off, Says Minister

Addis Ababa, January 3/2026 - The continuous initiatives aimed at digitizing the country's trade framework are yielding tangible outcomes, greatly enhancing the way business operations take place in Ethiopia, stated Trade and Regional Integration Minister Kasahun Goffe.

While conducting an inspection to evaluate the trade system in the capital city today, Kasahun mentioned that his department is fulfilling its responsibilities toward achieving the goals outlined in the Digital Ethiopia 2030 initiative.

He emphasized that export agreements and license procedures have entirely moved to a digital platform, supported by ongoing assistance and oversight to facilitate an effortless shift for companies.

In evidence of this advancement, the Minister referenced the deals involving Teff on the Zemen Gebeya platform, which surpassed 53 million Birr within a single month.

Stressing the government's dedication to expanding digital transactions, he mentioned that weekend markets will soon be included within the digital commerce system.

Additionally, Kasahun noted that advancements in the livestock trading sector have effectively minimized the role of unauthorized agents and middlemen.

By establishing additional livestock trading hubs and enhancing transparency within the system, the country has experienced a significant rise in income generated from the export of live animals, he mentioned.

Within the initial half of the ongoing 2018 Ethiopian financial year, the nation has secured more than 30 million USD through the export of animals. The government aims to achieve revenue of 70 million USD from this industry by the conclusion of the present financial period.
