Bewitched by the Self

You must remain constantly intoxicated. (...) In order not to experience the terrible weight of time, you must be continuously drunk.

—From the prose poem "Be Drunk" by Baudelaire

A reviewer once noted that each year-end, he and his spouse go see the ballet "The Nutcracker." He stated that observing the performers jump around brightens his mood. This comment strangely stayed with me, prompting me to sometimes attend the production during the end of the year too. Yesterday, I saw the Korean National Ballet performing "The Nutcracker." During the entire performance, I was taken back to my childhood days when I would read storybooks filled with magical tales.

Although the performers' incredible moves were truly amazing, what captured my attention even more was watching them seem as though they were lost in their own actions. As we grow older and develop self-consciousness, it becomes increasingly hard to lose ourselves completely! We no longer experience this kind of immersion. It's the end of the year. Drinking is acceptable, yet it's also an opportunity to feel momentarily carried away by something besides alcohol.
